Requirements for Nursing Applicants in Canada by Province
Canada is a land of great opportunities. Nurses who are qualified, have work experience, and want to immigrate to Canada must follow three simple steps. First, research each provincial association; second, self-assess and apply to a province; and lastly, once your temporary permit is granted, attempt the NCLEX exam (National Council Licensure Examination). Below mentioned are the requirements for nursing applicants across seven provinces in Canada.
Alberta
To work in Alberta as a registered nurse, you will need to provide evidence of RN certification, show your educational documents and have some work experience. The processing time is about three to six months. The fee is $525. You need to take the CELBAN or IELTS (Academic Version) to test your English language proficiency. Generally, people from the Philippines, India and Nigeria must complete a Substantially Equivalent Competence (SEC) assessment too.
British Colombia
In British Colombia, you must provide RN certification, education details and proof of work experience to work as a nurse. If deemed qualified, you will receive approval; if not, you will be asked to do a Substantially Equivalent Competency (SEC) Assessment. The processing time takes about three to six months. The processing fee is $560. You take the CELBAN or IELTS (Academic Version) to test your English language proficiency. Additionally, there is no bias toward one country; everyone is assessed individually.
Manitoba
To work as a nurse in Manitoba, firstly provide evidence of RN certification, your education and work experience details. It takes four to six months to process your application. The cost of the process is $525. To test your English language proficiency, attempt the CELBAN or IELTS (Academic Version) and to test your French language proficiency, attempt the TEF.
New Brunswick
Provide evidence of RN certification, education details and work experience at the time of your application. The process takes about four to six months, costing $452. Attempt the TEF for French and CELBAN or IELTS (Academic Version) for English to test your language proficiency. Generally, people from the Philippines, India and Nigeria must complete an SEC (Substantially Equivalent Competence) assessment.
Newfoundland and Labrador
At the time of submitting your nursing application, provide evidence of RN certification, education and work experience. In Newfoundland and Labrador, the process usually takes three to six months, but it could take more time due to backlog. The processing costs come up to $169.50. To check your English language proficiency, attempt the CELBAN or IELTS (Academic Version) or TOEFL. Generally, people from the Philippines, India and Nigeria must complete an SEC assessment.
Nova Scotia
While submitting your nursing application, provide evidence of RN certification, education and work experience documents. The nursing process takes six to eight months and costs $469.20. To test your English language proficiency, take the CELBAN or IELTS (Academic Version). Additionally, each applicant is assessed on an individual basis by an “Assessment Consultant.”
Ontario
Submit your application with RN certificate, education documents like a nursing degree or diploma equivalent to Ontario’s four year bachelor’s degree, and evidence of working as a nurse prior to your application. The application process takes about three to five months, once all the information is received. The fees vary depending on the nurse’s qualifications. For registered practical nurses and nurse practitioners, the fee is $226, while for registered nurses it is $678. You must also attempt the RN or RPN Jurisprudence Exam, along with the language proficiency test.
