7 Things You Need to Know Before You Apply to Take the IENCAP

Apply to Take the IENCAP

IENCAP stands for Internationally Educated Nurses Competency Assessment Program, which is an examination that tests the nursing knowledge, skill and judgment you acquired from your nursing education and work experience. The examination started back in 2013 by Touchstone Institute. Below is the list of seven things you need to know before you apply to take the IENCAP.

Examination Structure

The assessment is divided into two parts:

  1. Multiple-choice questionnaire

Professional responsibility and accountability

Service to the public and self-regulation

1) Objective structured clinical examination (OSCE)

Knowledge-based practice

A specialized body of knowledge

Competent application of knowledge and ethical practice

Registration

The applicant attempting the exam must be an eligible candidate referred by the college.

Fees and Payment

The fee for the virtual MCQ and in-person OSCE is $1,500. Cash and cheques are not accepted. You can make your payment by credit card or visa debit through PayPal. The registration process is complete once the payment has been made.

Cancellations and Refunds

The Institute enforces a strict cancellation policy. You need to contact the authorities if you want to cancel your exam. The exam cancellation fee costs $600. The deadline for a refund, which excludes the administrative fee, is 30 days before the date of your first part of the examination.

Candidates Outside Canada

If you are living outside of Canada, approach the Canadian embassy in your residential country to apply for a visa and contact Touchstone Institute to issue a Letter of Participation for your visa application.

Competence

Attempting the IENCAP is not mandatory, but if an eligible candidate refuses to take the exam, the college cannot determine if you satisfy the nursing education requirements. If you choose another nursing education instead of the IENCAP, then the college will evaluate those exams to determine if you meet the nursing education requirements. However, if you still lack particular proficiency, you will need to complete the IENCAP to proceed with your application.

Examination Attempt

It would be best if you were fully prepared for the examination. Once you reach the centre and, for some reason, cannot complete the exam, inform the examiner before the evaluation begins. If you back out before the assessment begins, you will be allowed to reschedule the exam. Even if you start the exam and are not able to continue, you need to inform the examiner immediately. They will record the reason and send the information to the college. The assessment will be considered incomplete, results won’t be provided, and your application will be sent for review to the college’s registration committee. You will have to explain your reasons to the committee, and they will decide whether you will be permitted to attempt the examination again or not.
